Today, Plantd is expanding beyond structural building panels with the launch of Plantd Biochar, converting a manufacturing byproduct into a high-performance soil amendment for agriculture.
From day one, our goal has been to rapidly pull carbon from the atmosphere and turn it into useful, durable products.
Zero-waste manufacturing is core to fulfilling that mission. With Plantd Biochar, biomass left over from panel production can now be put to use rather than discarded, keeping more of the carbon captured in the field stored in a useful product.
As our CEO, Nathan Silvernail, characterizes Plantd's approach:
“We didn't set out to build a soil amendment business; we set out to solve a waste problem.”
Once we commit to making a product, our goal is to deliver superior performance. Plantd Biochar is derived from the same perennial grass feedstock we use in our flagship structural panels. Unlike biochar made from woody biomass, our grass-based biochar naturally has a higher silica content, supporting plant vigor, soil structure, and nutrient efficiency. Applications include vegetable and berry production, turf and golf, regenerative and organic farms, and clay soil remediation.
As our Director of Agriculture, Dr. Janel Ohletz, puts it:
“Not all biochar performs the same in the field. Our high silica content biochar has been shown to improve crop disease resistance and shows promise for delivering stronger agricultural performance than wood-based biochar.”
Plantd Biochar also delivers the soil health benefits associated with biochar, including better water retention, improved soil structure, naturally raised soil pH, and stable, long-term carbon storage.
It's now available to growers and agricultural customers.
The launch marks Plantd’s expansion into agriculture, using the same vertically integrated supply chain that underpins our building materials business.
